Some Personal Tidbits

Family Picture During Christmas 2003

o       I am married to Marge who is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology of the University of South Carolina. We have two children, Judith (21) and Michelle (19), who are both internet-savvy and spends most of their leisure time chatting with friends on the Internet. Judith likes to play the violin, piano, and enjoys singing,. She is a senior at the University of South Carolina’s Honors College.  Michelle likes the cello and is still currently on sabbatical from playing the piano. She is in a freshman at Columbia University in New York City..

o       I came originally from the Philippine Islands, in particular, the island of Catanduanes. The see where it is, click on the link http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/middle_east_and_asia/philippines_rel93.jpg and look into the middle right portion for the small island in the Pacific Ocean. There wasn’t much from my little town, called Panganiban, though life there was easy and happy!

o       For my hobbies I like listening to music, preferably classical, reading science, mathematics and John LeCarre type novels, playing chess in the Internet Chess Club (my ICC handle is epena). I especially enjoy the topsy-turvy world of blitz chess where instant gratification is possible, but at the same time, the onset of depression is always close by! For physical sports, I like playing squash, and always encourages friends to play it. Indeed, I typically require my PhD students (males) to learn it … and when they beat me in squash, then there is a positive probability that they will be able to complete their PhD degree, if they continue being my advisee (of course, if they can’t beat me in squash, they could always change advisor to improve their chances of getting their PhD)!! I am also trying to learn to play golf, though this now seems to be a far-off dream and may happen in my second life, assuming that there is such a thing as a second life.

o       I also like to spend my leisure time doing things with my computers like creating web pages, a little bit of programming in a variety of languages, mastering the statistical packages such as R, S-Plus, SAS, and Minitab, or just browsing the World Wide Web.
