Background
o I
was born in the small island of Catanduanes of the Bicol region of the Philippines.
This island is in the Pacific Ocean of the middle eastern part of the Philippines. I
took my elementary schooling in this island.
o I
studied high school in the Philippine Science High School in Manila, Philippines.
This is a special school for math and science students in the Philippines,
similar to the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.
o My
undergraduate schooling was in the University of the Philippines
at Los Baņos (UPLB), which is at the foot of Mount
Makiling in the resort town of Los Baņos in Laguna,
Philippines. I
completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics in 1979, where I
graduated magna cum laude.
o While
an instructor in UPLB from 1979-1982 I studied for my Master of Science degree
in Statistics. I acquired this degree in 1982 just before going to the United States.
o In
1984 I acquired my Master of Science degree in Statistics from the Department
of Statistics, Florida State University,
Tallahassee, Florida. Go Noles!
o I
completed my PhD degree in Statistics in 1986 from Florida State
University. My
dissertation adviser was Professor Myles Hollander. Again, Go Noles!
o I
joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Bowling
Green State University, Bowling
Green, Ohio as an
Assistant Professor in 1986, became Associate Professor in 1991, and Full
Professor in 1997.
o I
left Bowling Green State University
in August 2000 and joined the Department of Statistics at the University of South Carolina
at Columbia.
