Educational Background

o       I was born in the small island of Catanduanes of the Bicol region of the Philippines. This island is in the Pacific Ocean of the middle eastern part of the Philippines. I took my elementary schooling in this island.

o       I studied high school in the Philippine Science High School in Manila, Philippines. This is a special school for math and science students in the Philippines, similar to the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.

o       My undergraduate schooling was in the University of the Philippines at Los Baņos (UPLB), which is at the foot of Mount Makiling in the resort town of Los Baņos in Laguna, Philippines. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics in 1979, where I graduated magna cum laude.

o       While an instructor in UPLB from 1979-1982 I studied for my Master of Science degree in Statistics. I acquired this degree in 1982 just before going to the United States.

o       In 1984 I acquired my Master of Science degree in Statistics from the Department of Statistics, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. Go Noles!

o       I completed my PhD degree in Statistics in 1986 from Florida State University. My dissertation adviser was Professor Myles Hollander. Again, Go Noles!

o       I joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio as an Assistant Professor in 1986, became Associate Professor in 1991, and Full Professor in 1997.

o       I left Bowling Green State University in August 2000 and joined the Department of Statistics at the University of South Carolina at Columbia.
