Text Lecture Notes and Elementary Survey Sampling, Fifth Edition by Richard L. Scheaffer, William Mendenhall III and R. Lyman Ott

Attendance My attendance policy corresponds to the policy stated in the student handbook: If you miss more than 10% of your classes (;SPMgt; 3 classes), the teacher may choose an appropriate penalty. I will deduct 2% from your final class average for each additional day that you miss after the third absence.

Grading Grades will be weighted in the following way:

Exam 1 100 points
Exam 2 100 points
Homework 100 points
Project 100 points
Final Exam 100 points
Total 500 points

The project will be undertaken individually. Rather than have each student prepare a sampling project, all students will use the same project (based on projects used by Dr. Spurrier and Dr. Lynch in the past). The project will be broken into parts: sampling plan, rough draft and final draft. In grading the project, I will place a strong emphasis on your communication skills as well as your technical skills.

Computers I will maintain a class web page that will be used primarily to communicate homework assignments and solutions and otherwise update the syllabus. The URL for the class web page is http://www.stat.sc.edu/ tex2html_wrap_inline38 grego/courses/stat519.

I will use the computer/LCD projection system extensively in class for demonstrations and introduction of computer software. We may also convene occasionally in Room 303A or one of the workstation labs for group work on the computer. The group work will consist primarily of stochastic simulations.

We will be using Minitab primarily throughout the course. I tend to like to use the best available package for the job at hand and thus Minitab and SAS will be used appropriately; I will also use Splus for classroom presentations. The text uses Minitab macros extensively (there are few statistical software packages with comprehensive sampling programs), but these are all written in the old Minitab macro language. I will rewrite these old macros in the new macro language to assist you in your homework-look for them on the homepage.
