Staff
The Stat Lab is staffed by a faculty director, Dr. John Grego and a manager, Dr. Roumen
Vesselinov. They take the lead in projects, and will serve as the primary contacts for the
duration of a client's involvement with the lab. In addition, the Stat Lab employs between 2 and
5 graduate and undergraduate students in Statistics. They are responsible for the input of data
and some of the statistical computer programming.
Dr. John M. Grego, the Director of the Stat Lab, is an associate professor in the
Department of Statistics. Prof. Grego received his Ph.D. in Statistics in 1989 from Penn State
and has been a faculty member at the University of South Carolina since that time. Professor
Grego has consulted with over 100 clients and supervised many large projects. He developed a
3-day short course with Prof. James D. Lynch and Prof. Don Edwards in Experimental Design that
has been taught to over 300 industrial clients. Professor Grego conducts collaborative research
with his clients and independent research in robust parameter design and semiparametric models.

Dr. Roumen Vesselinov, the Manager of the Stat Lab, received his Ph.D. in Statistics and
Demography in 2001 from University of Economics in Sofia, Bulgaria. He joined the Stat Lab in
November 2003. His previous experience includes working at New York State Assembly Ways and
Means Committee as econometrician; as senior research associate with Policy Research Associates
in Delmar, NY, and as an assistant professor at Department of Statistics and Econometrics at
University of Economics in Sofia, Bulgaria. Dr. Vesselinov’s main field of interest is
econometric modeling, time-series analysis and forecasting.
