As an assistant professor of statistics I teach graduate and undergraduate courses, conduct independent and collaborative research, and advise graduate students. The course work and research that I was involved in as a graduate student have given me the tools to excel at these tasks. I always felt that the professors in the department were truly concerned with my success. Their friendless and ease of approachability provided an atmosphere in which I could discuss not only questions related to course work, but also those pertaining to modern relevant research. They also challenged me with difficult questions that facilitated my growth as a graduate student. The other graduate students in the department have diverse academic backgrounds. I particularly liked the fact that the graduate students were not overly competitive. The students were always willing to discuss the material in the classes and their own current research. There were many social events amongst the graduate students. Based on my own personal experience I feel that anyone pursing a degree in the department will be taking on a challenging program that will develop them into a professional statistician.
