Purpose: To provide a strong foundation in basic probability for understanding the concepts and modelling of random phenomena, and to prepare students for study of the mathematical development of statistical methodology.

Current Textbook: Mathematical Statistics with Applications (6th Ed.), D. Wackerly, W. mendenhall and R. Sheaffer, Duxbury, 2002.

Instructor should contact the Undergraduate Director in Department of Statistics prior to changing the text.

Axioms and Properties of Probability: sample spaces, events, counting, laws of probability, conditional probability, independent events, Bayes' theorem	2	3 weeks
Discrete Distributions: Bernoulli trials, binomial, geometric, negative binomial, Poisson distributions, moment-generating function	3	3 weeks
Continuous Distributions: continuous random variables; uniform, gamma, normal, exponential, and other distributions	4	3 weeks
Bivariate distributions, bivariate normal, correlation coefficient, conditional distribution	5	3 weeks
Indpendent random variables, sums of independent random variables, Chebyshev's inequality and convergence in probability	6	2 weeks
